TWISTED

One night in October 2019, paramedics in Oxford, Indiana, responded to a 911 call at the home of local sheriff Don Munson. He was fine…and so were the 140 snakes that lived on the premises. Munson’s house, it turns out, was a de facto snake and reptile preserve, open to the public, and 36-year-old Laura Hurst was a frequent visitor. She dropped in a couple of times a week to check up on the 20 snakes she’d contributed to Munson’s collection. When Munson arrived home on that night, he discovered Hurst, unresponsive due to the eight-foot-long reticulated python that was wrapped around her neck. Paramedics were unable to save her.

RISE AND FALL

Catherine Shaw, a 23-year-old yoga teacher from England, hiked up a volcano outside San Juan La Laguna, Guatemala, before dawn one day in March 2019…and never returned. She was missing for six days before authorities discovered her dog, alive but cold, and then Shaw’s dead body, naked and badly bruised. Months later, an inquest and extensive interviews with Shaw’s family put together the circumstances of the woman’s death. It wasn’t murder—Shaw was a nudist, and investigators and her parents believe she hiked up the volcano, taking off articles of clothing as she went, intending to watch the sunrise in the buff. Because she’d been fasting for a few days before the hike, it’s likely that she was in a weakened state when she slipped off a peak and tumbled to her death.

MISHANDLED

Prosecutor Addelaid Ferreira-Watt was arguing a robbery case in the Umzimkhulu Regional Court (in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa) in November 2019. The defendants were accused of stealing a shotgun in the nearby town of Ixopo. During the trial, the gun in question was brought into the courtroom to be entered into evidence. The court officer who brought it in, however, fumbled the firearm…and dropped it. Not only was the officer in charge of transporting the gun, he was supposed to ensure that it wasn’t loaded before it became evidence. He failed at both tasks. When he dropped the gun, it discharged, sending a bullet into the hip of Ferreira-Watt. She was immediately transported to a local hospital, but did not survive the gunshot.

The court officer who brought it in, however, fumbled the firearm…and dropped it.
